Trinity

I am rejoicing in the doctrine of the trinity this week in a new way. I was pondering the attributes of God [my wife, Rosa has been reading A.W. Tozer's The Attributes of God :)] The ONE true God has existed eternally in three persons. If this were not so then many of His attributes would have had no expression. For eternity the love of God was known and expressed within the Trinity. The faithfulness of God was known and expressed within the Trinity. The One true God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We should not think that His attributes were awakened at the creation of this world but they were put on display for maximum glory through creation and most of all the gospel.

I love you triune God.

THE TRINITY.

O blessed glorious Trinity,
Bones to philosophy, but milk to faith,
Which, as wise serpents, diversely
Most slipperiness, yet most entanglings hath,
As you distinguish’d, undistinct,
By power, love, knowledge be,
Give me a such self different instinct,
Of these let all me elemented be,
Of power, to love, to know you unnumbered three.

John Donne

The Gospel Fixes Everything

The Gospel is the Antidote to Everything
Once there were two brothers. You know their story, more than likely. One was wasteful, exploitative, wanton, licentious. One was rigid, moralistic, uptight, legalistic. Two brothers with two personalities and two sets of attendant sins. But their father loved them both and all that he had belonged to both of them equally.

This is how staggeringly awesome the gospel of Jesus is.

Two sisters. One is a busybody, the other kinda poky. One rarely Sabbaths; the other makes every day a Sabbath. The prescription for both is focus on Jesus.

Two Americans. One is a practicing homosexual and proud of it. The other is a practicing Baptist and proud of it. One trusts his feelings, the other trusts his actions. Both are in desperate need of Jesus for pretty much the same reason.

This is how wonderful the gospel of Jesus is. It’s the skeleton key for all of humanity.

Medicine doesn’t work this way. You don’t treat spina bifida with drugs for leukemia. (At least, I don’t think you do.) You don’t give a decongestant to a kid with athlete’s foot. For every condition, there is a specific treatment. Different symptoms, different fixes.

But the gospel isn’t like that. It fixes everything.

We all exhibit a multitude of symptoms for our conditions, running the gamut from self-indulgent immorality to self-satisfying morality. Opposite ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between. Whatever your symptoms, the gospel is the answer.

There is no problem, pain, or perniciousness outside the universe-spanning scope of the gospel.
The gospel carries with it resurrection power.

So Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, rich or poor, smart or dumb, well or sick, bad or good . . . the gospel is the power to save for all who believe.

The gospel is the antidote to everything.

The Men God Uses

Horatius Bonar, writing the preface to John Gillies’ Accounts of Revival, describes true men of God as possessing the following nine characteristics:

1. They were in earnest about the great work on which they had entered: “They lived and labored and preached like men on whose lips the immortality of thousands hung.”

2. They were bent on success: “As warriors, they set their hearts on victory and fought with the believing anticipation of triumph, under the guidance of such a Captain as their head.”

3. They were men of faith: “They knew that in due season they should reap, if they fainted not.”

4. They were men of labor: “Their lives are the annals of incessant, unwearied toil of body and soul; time, strength, substance, health, all they were and possessed they freely offered to the Lord, keeping back nothing, grudging nothing.”

5. They were men of patience: “Day after day they pursued what, to the eye of the world, appeared a thankless and fruitless round of toil.”

6. They were men of boldness and determination: “Timidity shuts many a door of usefulness and loses many a precious opportunity; it wins no friends, while it strengthens every enemy. Nothing is lost by boldness, nor gained by fear.”

7. They were men of prayer: “They were much alone with God, replenishing their own souls out of the living fountain, that out of them might flow to their people rivers of living water.”

8. They were men whose doctrines were of the most decided kind: “Their preaching seems to have been of the most masculine and fearless kind, falling on the audience with tremendous power. It was not vehement, it was not fierce, it was not noisy; it was far too solemn to be such; it was massive, weighty, cutting, piercing, sharper than a two-edged sword.”

9. They were men of solemn deportment and deep spirituality of soul: “No frivolity, no flippancy . . . . The world could not point to them as being but slightly dissimilar from itself.”

A Tribute to My Mom

Nine years ago today, the Lord took my mom to be with Him in heaven. I wanted to express my thanks to the Lord for the intentional heritage she left me, my brothers, my children and future grandchildren and in an extended way to my church family.

There are many things that Mom instilled intentionally in my life: love with perseverance, love with loyalty, love when it’s hard, love without partiality, love your family, love the Lord, love the Bible, love excellence, love to learn, love to listen, love to think, love words, as well as a few things to hate.

But what is most compelling to my memory today is the way in which Mom taught with her words and life to love life and not fear death. Mom never flinched from talking about death. That was at least one of her greatest gifts to me. In a world that is consumed with itself and right now, talking about death as a reality – and a joyful reality for those who knew the Lord was (and still is) a prod in my heart to live for what outlives this life. I pray that my children and grandchildren and church family will benefit from this legacy of loving life and not fearing death.

Famous Mom lines I remember today: “One of you stop and find my glasses.”
“You couldn’t find your … if it weren’t attached.”
“You better not stop up my sink.”
(As Mom sits down at the table after preparing the meal) – “All I want is a glass of tea.”
“Better enjoy it – it may be the last meal of the day.”
“Little do good – a whole lot do better.”
“Prettiest one out there.”
“You boys just sit there and let your Dad get the trash.”
“Just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t mean you have to.”
“Pretty good isn’t good enough for a Blankenship.”
“Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Creeps in this petty pace from day to day.”
“We always go to church.”
“Your Dad never thinks you boys do anything wrong, but I know better because I birthed you.”
“Always kiss your parents good night.”
“Seven!”
“Where’s Uncle Curt’s fudge?”
“Play as well as you look and you’ll be just fine.”
“You didn’t ask but I am going to give you my opinion anyway.”
“Be a Bulldog.”
“Good night. I love you.”

Thank you Lord for such sweet memories!

Adult Bible Study notes on legalism

A couple of people asked me for the definitions I gave Sunday morning. Below is that section of my notes. May the Lord keep us from legalism and make us a people strong in faith.

A Biblical Definition of Legalism:

Legalism has at least two meanings that come back to the same core issue.

#1 Legalism is treating biblical standards of conduct (things that are really in the Bible) as rules to be kept by our own power in order to earn God’s favor.

Legalism is prevalent when a person is trying to be moral in his own strength, without relying on the grace and merciful help of God in Christ. Being moral when it is not from faith is legalism. In a real sense, morality serves the same function for the moralist that immorality does for the antinomian, the one who rejects all standards and rules, namely, it serves as an expression of self-reliance and self-assertion. The reason some Pharisees tithed and fasted is the same reason hippies claimed their freedom by pursuing whatever sexual perversion or feel good thing that was out there.

So the first meaning of legalism is the terrible mistake of treating biblical standards of conduct as rules to be kept by our own power in order to earn God’s favor. It is a danger that you and I have to be on guard against in our own lives every day.

#2) Legalism also is the erecting of specific requirements of behavior beyond the teaching of Scripture and making adherence to them the measurement of a person’s faith. This results in unbiblical exclusivism.

Christianity does not include everyone. We exclude people from the church because we believe worship should imply commitment to the lordship of Christ, the head of the church but exclusion of people from the church should never be taken lightly. Christ is the head of the church. It is His body, and He alone should set the entrance requirements.

What is the common component of both definitions of legalism? In both instances we use our own power to make ourselves moral or we use our own power to make the church moral. In one instance, we fail to rely on the power of God for our own sanctification. In the other instance, we fail to rely on the power of God for the sanctification of others. So, what unites these two forms of legalism at the root is unbelief—unbelief in regard to ourselves – that it is God who works in us to will and to do his good pleasure (Philippians 2:12, 13); and unbelief in relation to others that God will make His will known and incline them to do it. As Paul says in Philippians 3:15, “Let those of us who are mature be thus minded, and if in anything you are otherwise minded, God will reveal that also to you.” Paul confidently entrusts the purification of the church to God.

The more our confidence in the sovereign power of God for our own lives and the lives of others grows the less legalism will creep in. But if we grow weak in faith, then inevitably, we will try to compensate for the loss of confidence in God by increased moral resolve and the piling on of man-made regulations. The result is that the very morality that we had hoped would save ourselves and the very regulations we hoped would purify our church end up falling prey to the massive power of the flesh, and become its instruments of self-reliance and self-sufficiency.

Today is the day

William Hendrickson

There is a line by us unseen that crosses every path.

The hidden boundary between God’s patience and His wrath.

How far can one go on in sin – how long will mercy spare

where does grace end and where begin the confines of despair.

An answer from the sky is seen, ye who from God depart –

while it is called today repent and harden not your heart.

What is impossible with men is possible with God

Who can be saved? Are you going to stop with the words, “With man this is impossible”? Or will you go on and rejoice over the words, “But all things are possible with God.” Think of the hardest unbeliever you know – and then say with Jesus, “All things are possible with God.” Think of the child with the most obstacles stacked against them and say with Jesus, “All things are possible with God.” Think of the person the first century Christians would have said was the least likely to ever come to faith – that murdering Saul and say with Jesus, “Nothing is impossible with God.”
Nobody is too hard for God to save. Therefore let us ask the Lord to save – to do the impossible, and let us boldly fill our mouths with the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation. – Brother Joe

“There’s no use trying,” said Alice. “One can’t believe impossible things.” I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” – Lewis Carroll

“And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.” Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’? “But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’?” He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? “So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.” – The Lord Jesus

If you believe God 100% of the time you have only done what you should. Anything less is an evil heart of unbelief. If you have faith to move mountains or pluck up mulberry trees – don’t be impressed with faith. What’s special about faith is that this tiny bit of faith puts you in touch with a great big God! (Consider David vs. Goliath; or the report of Caleb and Joshua and the giants in the promised land)

“Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or think according to the power that works in us through Christ Jesus.” – Apostle Paul

“The more impossible the odds, the more glory is God’s.” – Brad Arnold

“Faith does not consider what is probable. Faith considers God” – George Mueller

“Gospel” Hip-Hop

Recently while at work I for some strange reason began “rapping” the lyrics to a song I haven’t heard in probably 8-9 years (by God’s grace I was unconsciously doing some editing). The song is, “Ain’t Nuthin But A ‘G’ Thang” it is by Dr. Dre and Snopp Dogg two notorious rappers who have been popular for some time. When it suddenly dawned on me what I was doing and after some reflecting on how long it was since I listened to that song, I had a thought about a related topic. The topic is Gospel Hip-Hop and some people have weighed in against it chiding it for among other things imitating the world instead of standing apart from the world. My thought is this, if after 8 or 9 years I still remembered the lyrics to “Ain’t Nuthin But A ‘G’ Thang” how much better will it be if 8 or 9 years later I am suddenly “rapping” the following lyrics…

Triune Praise

written by shai linne

Verse 1

Praise God the Father, the Immortal Creator

For Your glory you made us, You’re the Sovereign Orchestrator

All that You decree will most surely come to happen

You’re awesome as can be and Your glory none can fathom

Nothing could ever stain You, the heavens can’t contain You

We thank You for sending Your Son to explain You

Otherwise we would have remained in the dark

but You sent Your Holy Spirit to spark a change in our hearts

According to Your eternal purpose and will

You determined to reveal Yourself to those who deserve to be killed

Those of us whom You foreknew adore You

We praise You that You predestined us to be conformed to

The image of Your Son who’s the radiance of Your glory

When I meditate on it, the weightiness of it floors me

So Father, we’ll praise you over and over again

Because You sent Your only Son to atone for our sins

Chorus

Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son,

Glory to The Spirit- Three and Yet One

One in Your essence, Three in Your Person

The same in Your nature, distinct in Your working

Oh my soul- behold the wonder of the Trinity

Blessed be the Trinity, Oh, what a mystery!

I’ll stand amazed for the rest of my days

Pouring out my heart in Triune praise

Verse 2

Praise God the Son, Second Person of the Trinity

You’re distinct from the Father, yet you share in His divinity

Fulfilling an eternal covenant- You came through

To planet earth to save who? All the Father gave You

You became a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief

For the glory of Your Father You extinguished the beef

That stood between us at the cross- the Father’s anger released

The Shepherd slain for the sheep, the situation is deep

I can’t find the right language to speak, in fact it’s making me weep-

Just the thought of You saving this creep

You’re risen from the dead, I still can’t get this in my head,

How the Judge could leave the bench and go to prison instead

Lord Jesus, you’re amazing, Your bleeding is what saved men

It’s the reason why we’re praising, can’t wait to see Your face

In the meantime, please help us to see You as colossal

And by the Spirit live lives worthy of the gospel

Chorus

Verse 3

Praise God the Holy Spirit, 3rd person of the Trinity

Distinct from Father and Son, yet share in Their divinity

Holy Spirit we praise You, You don’t like the spotlight

You’d rather point away from yourself and give props to Christ

But yet because You’re God, You deserve veneration

And You’re the One responsible for our regeneration

You apply the finished work of Christ to all the elect

Your call is effectual- You haven’t lost one yet

You comfort us when sin, Satan and the world got us bothered

And it’s only by You that we cry out “Abba Father”

You’re the Spirit of adoption, the Spirit of Truth,

You graciously provide Your people with the gifts and the fruit

You help us kill sin and dis-attach us from our idols

If it wasn’t for You, we’d never understand the Bible

Because You wrote it- For our life it will surely suffice

Amazingly, You do it all for the glory of Christ!

Chorus

Knowing the Nature of Your Evil

Knowing the Nature of Your Evil

By John Piper john-piper2

It is important that we know the nature of the evil in our hearts. Do you think the essence of your evil is disobeying commandments? That’s a good start. But it’s not the essence of our evil. Commands simply name the evil and its fruits, and tell us not to do them. The essence of our evil is that we prefer anything to God (Romans 1:23; 2:23). Commands do not create the possibility of evil. Commands name it. Long before we are told not to covet, we covet. Disobeying the command, “Thou shalt not covet,” is not equivalent to the evil of coveting. The evil of coveting is there first, and then is compounded by the transgression of the commandment not to covet. Paul said, “I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet’” (Romans 7:7). That is, I wouldn’t have known the seriousness of my evil if God had not named it in the law. But lawbreaking is not the essence of my evil. Desiring anything above God is the essence of my evil, before any commands name it. One reason this is important to know is that it will affect the way you pursue change. If you think the essence of your evil is commandment-breaking, your focus for change will be commandment-keeping. That is doomed to fail for two reasons. If we get good at it, we think we have changed, but the essence of our evil remains. If we can’t get good at it, we despair and quit trying. But if we know that the essence of our evil is not commandment-breaking, but preferring anything to God, then our focus for change will be a change of heart. That is hopeful, because God promised, “I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19). This is the new covenant that Jesus purchased with his blood (Luke 22:20). We receive it by faith.

Naturally Disposed To Sin??

john_owen1

What’s Your Disposition? February 17th, 2009 by Stephen Altrogge

This quote is jimmy-jam packed with pastoral wisdom. John Owen understood that the way our bodies are wired can shape the nature of our temptations. For example, I’m particularly prone to the sin of worry. When the budget gets tight, I don’t just worry in my head, I feel it in my chest. Anxiety. Squeezing, gripping, joy-stealing. As if someone has placed a large iron dumbbell directly on my chest. Anxious feelings then drag me back into the ring of anxious thoughts, and I take another beating from my worried mind. It’s a brutal cycle. So can I just write off anxiety, or anger, or any other temptation as “just the way I am”? Nope! Rather, knowing the temptations that are particular to me helps me fight sin more effectively. Knowing my particular temptations allows me to prepare for the battle ahead of time. A sinking bank balance is a like a signal flare: Get ready, the battle is coming! Arm yourself with scripture, prayer, and fellowship, because it’s going to be intense. It’s going to be an all out brawl against both your mind and your body. What are the signal flares in your life? Do you know yourself? Are you familiar with the hard-wiring of your mind and body? What sins are particularly difficult to fight? Knowing these things will help you prepare for the battle ahead of time – to pick up the sword of scripture before you’re in the heat of the battle. Know yourself. Know your sins. Prepare for battle.

Sports camp aims to help at-risk youths

Camp included sports drills, prayer and giveaways.

Joe Blankenship wants every kid to learn how to catch a ball. It could change that child’s life.

Statistics show high schoolers who play a varsity sport are 40 percent more likely to graduate, Blankenship said. To help kids get a head start on those on tryouts, Blankenship started the Inner City Sports Clinic.

Run by the One Hope Ministry, the camp aims to help at-risk children from ages 7 to 16 by teaching sports like football, volleyball and golf. The camp, from 9 a.m. to noon at Comanche Park, started Tuesday and ended Friday. And on each of those mornings, a team of volunteers picked up 200-250 kids throughout Tulsa for a day of athletics and prayer.

“It’s a way to help them break out of some of the cycles of discrimination and some of the cycles of desolation,” Blankenship said. “And we do it a little bit in hopes of trying to talk to them about the Lord in the process.”

The camp draws local sports celebrities — high school and college coaches and their players — to instruct the campers. To kick off the week, Union head football coach Kirk Fridrich brought about a dozen of his players Tuesday to lend a hand and toss some passes. Half of James Thomas’ volleyball team also showed up.

Even rain couldn’t stop the camp. About 200 kids and more than 100 volunteers crammed into the gym after a heavy downpour began Thursday.

Football, baseball and basketball coaches from Coweta, Sapulpa and

even a college in Shreveport, La., set up stations for sports drills.

“As long as it’s fast-moving, fast-paced, they enjoy it,” said Bubba Burcham, Coweta’s head football coach.

Jeric Robinson agreed. The 14-year-old wore a Chris Paul jersey while running agility drills and clutching passes.

“It gets you energized, enthusiastic for sports,” Robinson said. “It helps you realize God is the one true God.”

Prayer and songs sandwich the sports sessions. At noon, prizes are given away, such as a Kansas Jayhawks basketball jersey — it’s one final camp feature, and one that always throws the kids into a frenzy.

Said Blankenship: “We’re a group of (people) committed to finding things that help kids.”

How do I save mp3 sermons from this blog?

The best way I have found so far is by using Firefox browser:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Install on computer, get the following download for your firefox browser:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

With the desired sermon clicked on from the “Sermon Archive” page

Go to Tools on top bar of Firefox browser and select “download them all tools” select the mp3 box and select start tell the download them all utility where to put your mp3 file.

Now you may not need to go through all this to download, you certainly do not need to do this simply to listen. I have tried to download the file when opened by right clicking but no commands come up that enable this function. It may be the way my computer is set up…there is probably an easier way to download, however it seems I am prone to doing things the hard way!

God bless you

2005 Summer Intern Quotes

2005 Summer Intern Quotes

project 61

I was at the projects today. Go inside, said ******, the eleven year old who was on the porch. She was talking on the phone and didn’t want to be bothered. Is your mom here? No, just go in.
I pushed the door open and walked inside. The floor was filthy. Trash piled into corners. A dirty rug spread over the dirtier tile. A six year old- *******- ran to the door. In her hand was a piece of bread spread with runny peanut butter. The other kids were on the floor making their sandwiches- ****, who at nine was the oldest one in the house, *****, a five year old, whose clothes were mismatched, and whose, hair- like everyone else’s- hadn’t been fixed, *******, the two year old who crouched in front of a tiny TV watching The Lion King, and *****, the baby who stole my heart last summer when I first found her sitting on a concrete porch by herself in hundred degree heat.

She was seven or eight months old then. Now she’s one. She’s starting to recognize me; I come by a couple times a week. She ran towards me and held out her arms. I almost cried. Her hair’s not fixed. Her clothes weren’t washed. Her diaper was wet. Her face was dirty. Her mom wasn’t there. Her dad has never been. And she runs to my arms because they’re just as safe, maybe more safe, than any of the ones she lives with.

I wanted to cry. And I wanted to love her. Last time I was there, I fed ***** from the bowl of corn she was carrying around. Family meal times don’t exist in this culture. Instead, they shove the babies a bottle, or a bowl of food when they’re old enough, and let them wander around the house trying to figure out how to eat it on their own.

I cried tonight. Because I don’t think anyone tucked ***** into bed. I don’t think anyone said, I love you. I don’t know if anyone does. But what good are the tears. I can’t cry her up some new clothes or some good food or a decent house. I can’t cry hard enough or long enough to make sure that she survives to go to kindergarten. I can’t make sure her mother sends her. I can’t help her push through thirteen years of education to get a diploma that only means maybe she can be a cashier instead of a cook. I can’t ever cry enough. I can’t cry her some love. I can just come home.
See my mom on the couch reading to my baby sister. Hear my dad playing in the pool with some of the other kids. Eat a good meal and sleep on a nice bed…only not sleep…instead just think…about how I wish I could pick up that pudgy little baby and build a home for her and love her, love her into the kingdom.

There’s so much pain at the projects. The government’s working desperately to cover it up, and sometime I get lulled into believing things aren’t that bad. This is Bible-belt Oklahoma, after all, not Skid Row, California .

Then I see ******* running drugs. She’s ten. Or talk to her mom ********, who saw the twenty-two year old boy stabbed to death on their porch last week but won’t say what happened. Or on the way home from church hear ******* says I hate my step dad. He beats my mommy.
Or there’s *******, a three year old, who didn’t know today if his mom was alive or not. This is the boy who told me his daddy picks him up so he won’t see dead people. Or I talk to *******, who has some kind of mental handicap that hasn’t even been diagnosed. Or I watch  ******* struggle through reading a simple sentence- he’s in seventh grade. Or ******* talks about how he saw the boy get stabbed. Or I go to a door to ask for  ****** and hear someone being cussed out. Or I try to talk to ******** but he won’t stop screaming and punching and I don’t know if he’s a crack baby or if it’s something worse. Or I’m sitting in a group of eight little kids about to go through the alphabet with them and one of them turns to *****. Your daddy went to jail, he said. ***** just drops her head. It’s okay. It’s not your fault, I said. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know whose fault it was. I knew that I wanted to wrap her up and hold her in my arms and tell her about Jesus. I wanted to tell her what I told ******* earlier when he said he never saw his dad. I wanted to tell her about God as a Father. I wanted to communicate the love that has changed my life. I wanted to somehow let her know that I really believe that the light of the Gospel could shine even into such great darkness.

But ******* started crying and wanted another paper and ******* grabbed the flashcards and ******* ran off and **** didn’t know what a letter was and ****** showed up and the moment passed. And so instead, I just cried tonight and prayed and promised God that even if I can’t go back to these kids. Even if I can’t go back to *****, I promise, I’ll go somewhere else and spend my life learning how to love.

And I’m haunted by how I don’t love them enough, how the heat hits a hundred and I’m ready to turn around…But I want to love…God knows, I want to…

Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous but sinners. – matthew 9:12-13

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” – matthew 9:35-38

And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.” – matthew 11:4-5

Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me. – matthew 18:5

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. – matthew 23:23

For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me…Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” – matthew 25:35-36, 40

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion- to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. – isaiah 61:1-4

…how shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

#1 my hair has turned green.

#2 someone backed into my car at the projects today. we called the police; they never came. it’s the projects- they don’t come out here for car wrecks, an old black man said. that same man, the one who backed into my car, crawled underneath it and pounded the bumper back into place.
#3 someone tried to sell my brother weed this morning while we were picking up kids for church. that does funny things to you. i wouldn’t have minded so much if it was me- but my little brother… sometimes i can’t believe my parents let the two of us go down to the projects alone. it probably isn’t safe. but there’s no one else to go. i am reminded of my parent’s bravery, of their decision to put the gospel above all else, of the way they are teaching us that our lives are expendable for the kingdom.

the sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing- to find the place where all the beauty came from

Sunday Morning. I was picking up a nine year old boy named ***** for church. I knocked on the door of his apartment. *****, you coming to church? Yeah, he muttered and stumbled around sleepily rounding up some shoes and clothes. When he stepped outside of the apartment, I held up my hand for a high five. How’s it going, buddy? But ***** didn’t high five me. Instead, he slipped his hand into mine and wouldn’t let go. So we walked down the stairs hand in hand. And we waded through the trash and smashed beer bottles towards my car, me in my pink skirt and white shirt and high heels and ***** in his oversized t-shirt and jean shorts and dirty tennis shoes. And- for one isolated moment- with his grimy black hand in mine, I caught a glimpse of agape love. It was beautiful.

“Hot cup of cocoa by the fire…can’t be enjoyed when just outside the door a homeless man’s tears are becoming ice…” -Dan Watson

“Pride has no place in unity, and unity is God’s decree and command for His church. But, forever bending to self-centered sin in the place of God-centered love, somehow we smuggle our pride in amid all that grace.” – Chris Smith and Dan Watson

from the projects…

My dad took a little six year old boy named ***** home yesterday who had been acting up. When dad walked him into the center at the apartment project, he explained to **** ******, the woman who runs the center what had happened. **** ****** leaned down to ***** and gave him her classic line, “Just remember, *****, you can’t love others unless you love yourself,” and then she poked her finger into his chest and said, “And there’s a lot to love in there.”
And at first I laughed when I heard that, and then I realized why I was laughing- because it was ridiculous and flat out wrong. There’s not a lot to love in there. There’s a lot of sin. I pray for the grace to never forget how wicked my own heart is. I am so easily deceived. I thank God for the people in my life who encourage me day after day so that I will not be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Vacation Bible School

…yesterday i played a split personality in a skit…i was both of the bad guys who conspired against Daniel…i’ve also played Daniel, a lion, a cow, a tiger, a bear, various parts of creation (such as the sky, the land, the water, the sun, the moon, ect), Martha, and Mary…as Mary I had to wash “Jesus’ ” feet with my hair…Chris, who was playing Jesus, kept wiggling his toes…i almost gagged…i’ve also been several puppets, stevie- a pig with lisp and a bad case of the stutters, la tigre- a tiger of french/spanish orgin who does not know how to growl, and perry- a perigrene falcon, who speaks in a queer australian/british accent and advertises himself has the fastest bird in the entire world…tomorrow he will attempt to break the world record and fly at a speed of 201 miles per hour…

…i’ve also been the bus driver that goes to apache manor, one of the government projects…yesterday i drove home nineteen kids in the fifteen passenger van (they were all buckled)…basically everyone in my van was dating/liked someone else in the van (these kids are ages 4-13) so i’ve made a new rule…once you get into the van, you’re single…there are absolutely no romantic relationships of any kind allowed inside my vehicle…so far the kids are complying…
…this week has been a jumble of giving piggy back rides, talking about the glory of God, planning puppet skits, explaining to parents why their children are suspended, and telling kids i love them…it’s been draining, physically and mentally, not so much because of the work or the continual demand for more ideas, but because the kids at the projects are trapped, in a heartbreaking cycle of sin…

…there’s an eleven year old boy i’ve been picking up named ******…he’s one of the nicest kids…he calls me Miss Miriam and he looks out for his little brother and he can recite the memory verse from every day…and he loves VBS and he loves us and we love him…but then today he grabbed a toilet paper roll from a girl named ******* (we were wrapping people in toilet paper since today’s story was Lazarus) and ******* punched him…he said, why you hittin’ me…and she punched him again…so he punched her back…we have strict no fighting rule…throwing a punch means you’re suspended for the week, but my dad decided to offer him grace since ****** has been so good and it seems like we’ve really been getting through to him…dad said he could come back if he’d apologize…he refused…instead, he sat at the back and cried because he wasn’t going to get to come back…i sat next to him and cried too…
…on the way home, we talked…about forgiveness, about turning the other cheek, about overcoming evil with good, about Christ dying for the ungodly, about what it means to be like Jesus, about what it means to be a real man…and he offered to apologize but my dad said it was too late…he can’t come back…

…and ****** said something on the way home today that ripped my heart into tiny little pieces…i was asking him why he hit ******* and he looked over at me with tears in his eyes and he said, that was the way i was raised, when someone hits you, you hit them back…
…and it was the way he was raised…and what he needs is to learn that what Jesus teaches is different from the way he was raised and we’re teaching that at VBS…but what breaks my heart is that he, and tons of these other kids, can’t keep the rules enough to come to hear what they need to hear to help them change their thinking…and, in many ways, it’s a losing battle, a lose-lose situation…either he comes back to VBS, where, if he gets hit again, he’ll probably hit back again…or he sits at home and never hears the truths that could help him change into the kind of kid who could love an enemy and overcome evil with good…
…and so i sobbed at after i dropped him off…i pounded the steering wheel and wept because i don’t know what to do or how to help him…and what he said keeps echoing in my head…the way i was raised, the way i was raised, the way i was raised…and i tried to tell him today, but the way he was raised is wrong…it’s so wrong…
…and i see the sins of the fathers being passed down to the children daily and it breaks my heart…and it’s what isaiah called “the desolation of many generations”…so i cry and i pray for him and when Dakota got out of the car i gave him a hug and said, i still love you…and i’ll go by tomorrow and invite him to church Sunday…and then two weeks from today, i’ll leave…and go back to california and try to love people there…
…but i’m tired of it…i’m tired of loving and having to leave and i long for heaven and for the day when my love will be perfect and the leaving will be over…

“Sin is the suicidal exchange of the glory of God for the broken cisterns of created things, …infinite value and beauty for some fleeting, inferior substitute. This is the ultimate insult [to God].” – John Piper

“God is glorified both by being understood and by being delighted in. He is not glorified so much by one brand of evangelicals who divorce delight from understanding, and He is not glorified so much by another branch of evangelicals who divorce understanding from delight.” – John Piper

“Christian complaints of victimization and abuse in media are “morally hypocritical… The wonder is not that there is so much stinging criticism from outside the church but that there is so little within… Besides, any liberal prejudice against Christians has been more than amply repaid.” – Os Guiness

“The effect of playing the victim [as the modern American evangelical church is doing] is to reject the ethic of Christ and resort to a politics of resentment. The politics of resentment is the politics of revenge… Conservative Christians criticise the concept of tolerance with some justification. But instead of countering tolerance with its Christian corrective – forgiveness – they counter with resentment, its self-righteous and anti-Christian contradiction.” – Os Guiness

“Idols are what we make out of the evidence for God… Since we were made to relate to God but do not want to face Him, we forever infalate things in this world to religious proportions to fill the vacuum left by God’s exclusion.” – Richard Keyes

“Every day you are either getting nearer to God or farther off.” – J.C. Ryle

…this is Piper’s paraphrase of Edward’s view on orginal sin…

“Edwards asks how one man (like me) can be morally implicated in the sin of another (like Adam). He answers by asking why the “I” that exists today is responsible for the moral acts that I did or didn’t do yesterday. The answer, evidently, is that there is a union between the me of today and the me of yesterday. But why is there? he asks. He answers that ‘God’s upholding created substance – or causing it to exist in each successive moment – is altogether equivalent to an imediate production out of nothing, at each moment, because its existence at this moment is…wholly from Him, and not in any…degree fro mits antecedent existence.’ This implies that ‘There is no identity or oneness but what depends on the arbitrary constitution of the Creator, who by His wise sovereign establishment so unites these successive new effects that He treats them as one by communicating to them like properties, relations, and circumstances.’ This means that ultimately the reason the me of today is morally responsible for the actions of the me of yesterday is that God has arbitrarily willed that it be so.”

…this is dan watson’s paraphrase of piper’s paraphrase…

1. Our being, both in its original creation and in its constant sustenance, is derived completely from God.2. Therefore, I (as I currently exist) am linked to me (as I have existed up until this moment) not out of existential continuity but only out of God’s sovereign and arbitrary decision to link the me of now with the me of yesterday.3. Therefore, everyone’s identity is not absolute but is established by God’s arbitrary decision to link it to a past identity belonging to what we call the same person.4. Therefore, it is just as logical and fair to link the me of right now to a different past person (though, presumably, God does not do this).5. Therefore, to link me to Adam’s guilt and identity as a sinner is just as fair and logical.

the way it always was is no longer good enough…

from college Bible study tonight…

Love for the light is not caused by coming to the light. We come to the light because we love it. Otherwise, our coming is no honor to the light. How does it honor the light when the only reason we come to the light is to get the things we loved in the dark? God will not be a means to an end. He is the end.

Hebrews 11:6 “He who comes to God must believe that He exists and the He is rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

The faith the pleases God is the assurance that when we come to Him we will find Him to be the all-satisfying treasure.

other quotes…

Do not come unless you can say the Cross is the attraction.

It must be come, never go; we cannot ask another to do what we are not willing to do ourselves.

Be eager to serve more than you’re serving.
